Discover Leavenworth
Washington's Bavarian village, from the family who has called it home for over three generations. Every season offers something worth the drive.
When to Visit Leavenworth
There is no wrong time, only different kinds of magic. Here is what each season holds.
Leavenworth in winter: the village lit up below, snow-covered Cascades behind, Christmas trees glowing on the village green.
The Village Turns Into Something Else Entirely
In Washington, no village celebrates the holiday season quite like Leavenworth. Christmastown runs November 27 through December 24: carolers, horse-drawn carriages, Santa at the Gazebo, and live music throughout the season. Over half a million lights are on nightly from Thanksgiving through the end of February. Weekends draw the biggest crowds, but weeknights have their own appeal. The village is fully lit, the atmosphere is warm, and the streets are easier to enjoy.
In January, Christmastown gives way to Winter Karneval, a month of weekend events that keeps the village lively well past the holidays. Fire dancers perform at the Gazebo, artisan ice carvers take over Front Street Park, and MLK Jr. weekend closes with fireworks over town. The final weekend brings Fasching, Leavenworth's version of German Mardi Gras, with a pub crawl through the village.
Snow on the Cascades above, firelight below. Winter in Leavenworth is best understood in person.
Outside the festival calendar, winter in Leavenworth has plenty going for active guests. Mission Ridge, Washington's sunniest ski area, sits just 30 minutes from the village. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails begin directly from the edge of town at Icicle Creek Canyon and the Ski Hill. And one mile from the village, the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm lets you go inside the enclosure and feed reindeer by hand. Open year-round but especially popular in the holiday season. Advance reservations required.

Book early. Christmas weekend rooms typically fill by August. If you have a specific date in mind, do not wait.
Maifest parade on Front Street, May. Horse-drawn carriages, traditional costumes, and the whole village out to watch.
The Season Most Visitors Haven't Discovered Yet
Spring is the easiest season to underestimate. Crowds thin considerably after the holiday rush, room availability opens up, and the valley goes through a transformation most visitors never see. From late March into May, arrowleaf balsamroot turns entire hillsides gold above the valley, starting with the Ski Hill trails and Icicle Creek Canyon floor, then working up the higher slopes as the season progresses. If you're coming for Maifest or a spring weekend, you may not know this is happening above you. Those who find out tend to come back every year.
May brings Maifest, one of the most authentically Bavarian celebrations in the United States. For 55 years, the village has marked the arrival of spring with alphorns, dancers in traditional Tracht, and the Grand March down Front Street. Townsfolk and visitors celebrate together every year. The same weekend brings the Mai Blumenlauf 5K, a fun run through the village that draws locals and visitors alike. Pension Anna sits one block from Front Street, which makes Maifest weekend considerably easier to enjoy.
Best availability. Lower rates. A valley in full bloom. Spring asks very little of you in return for a great deal.
For whitewater rafting, spring is the only season that makes real sense on the Wenatchee River. Peak snowmelt runoff creates conditions that are genuinely exciting. Not manufactured adventure tourism, but a river doing what rivers do in May.

Leavenworth in early fall: red maples and golden cottonwoods filling the valley under a clear blue sky.
Color in the Valley, Lager in the Streets
October is the most visually dramatic month in Leavenworth. The valley turns gold and red as the cottonwoods and maples peak, the mountains above show their first snow, and the village fills with Leavenworth Oktoberfest: three weekends of brass bands, German lager, and a Bavarian party that draws visitors from across the country.
September is worth considering on its own terms. The crowds are lighter, the trails are dry and uncrowded, and the valley starts showing early color by mid-month.
October in Leavenworth is two things at once: a village in full festival mode and a valley going quietly gold around it.
If you're visiting with children, Halloween weekend in Leavenworth is a genuine hidden gem. The entire downtown participates, shops hand out candy along Front Street, and the Bavarian architecture in full autumn color makes for a memorable trick-or-treat experience.

Where to Eat & Drink
The dining in Leavenworth has more range than the Bavarian architecture suggests. For breakfast and lunch there's Bear Bear next door for chef-driven brunch, Coffee & Waffles for locally roasted coffee and stuffed waffles, and Crêpe Café Sisters for made-to-order sweet and savory crêpes. München Haus handles sausages and beer on the village square. For dinner, the spectrum runs from Andreas Keller's subterranean German hall to the seven-course organic prix fixe at Mana — with handcrafted pasta at Larch, Pacific Northwest seasonal cooking at Carta, Austrian cuisine at Mozart's, and Italian classics from Visconti's wood-fired oven in between. Most are within a few blocks of each other on or near Front Street. For our full recommendations with details and personal notes from Erika and Martin, see the Leavenworth Restaurants guide.

Insider Tips from Martin & Erika
Seven years of hosting guests in Leavenworth teaches you a few things. Here is what we share with almost everyone who asks.
Book Festival Weekends Months in Advance
Christmastown lighting weekends in November and December book up six months or more in advance. Oktoberfest weekends sell out almost as fast. If you have specific dates in mind around a festival, do not wait.
Park Once and Walk
Pension Anna sits one block from everything in the village. During busy weekends, parking lots fill quickly and moving the car costs you time. Leave it with us and walk everywhere.
Talk to the Team at Check-In
Before you head out for the day, stop at the front desk. Our team knows what's happening in the village that weekend, which trails are in good shape, where to get a table without a wait, and what's worth skipping. It takes two minutes and usually saves a few wrong turns.
The Wenatchee Valley Is Not Just Apple Country
Cherries start in late June, peaches and pears run through August, and apples carry into September. U-pick farms and roadside stands are a short drive from town. If you're visiting in summer or early fall, check what's in season. A morning at an orchard is one of those things you'll wish you'd known about before you leave.
Check What's On Before You Book
Before you finalize your dates, check what's playing. Icicle Creek Center for the Arts hosts concerts, theater, and visiting artists year-round. Some weekends are worth planning around. In summer, Leavenworth Summer Theater brings full Broadway-style productions to an outdoor stage. Both surprise guests who weren't expecting a serious arts scene in a small mountain town.
The Best Times No One Talks About
If December is fully booked, January and early February are genuinely excellent: the village lights stay up through Valentine's Day, crowds thin out, and the winter atmosphere is still very much alive. April through early June is Leavenworth's most underrated stretch: wildflowers on the trails, spring festivals, and a quieter village. And October, when the valley turns gold and Oktoberfest fills the streets, is as good as it gets.
